TROTWOOD — Trey Landers scored 20 points to lead Wayne in a 100-24 blowout of West Carrollton Saturday night in the first game of the Ohio High School Division I Sectional Tournament at Trotwood-Madison High School.

Wayne improved to 23-0 by crushing the Pirates and rolling on to the second round of the tournament. Along with Landers 20 points, three other Warriors reached double figures. Chazz George poured in 17 points, Roderick Caldwell added 15 points and Isaiah Trice chipped in 10 points to contribute to the win. Wayne rained down ten 3-pointers and nine different players scored points to contribute to the decisive first round win.

“It always feels good to get started, to get that first one and get the juices flowing,” said Coach Travis Trice. “When you’re off seven or eight days like that, you don’t have many of those breaks during the tournament. I thought we did a great job defending, I thought we shared the ball; we had 28 assists and 11 turnovers. I told them that will win a lot of games for us. It’s good to get that one under our belt.”

Wayne moved out to a 13-2 lead as Caldwell scored on a drive to the hoop then hit the free throw after the called foul. Kenny Couch followed with another Wayne basket. West Carrollton got a bucket from Josh VanScyoc to cut the lead to nine points, but that is when Wayne turned on the turbo blasters. The Warriors scored 25 unanswered points that featured two dunks by Landers, one set up by a Deshon Parker alley-oop pass off the backboard. 3-pointers by Deshon Parker, Caldwell and Demond Parker gave Wayne a commanding 38-4 advantage at the end of the first quarter,

The second quarter was more Wayne as the Warriors scored the first eight points and continued to dominate offensively and defensively. Trice scored two consecutive baskets followed by buckets from Landers and George to extend Wayne’s lead to 56-12 at the half.

Wayne started the second half with another alley-oop dunk by Landers, this time served up nicely by Caldwell. Wayne continued to push the gas pedal as Chandler Fointno hit a 3-pointer to set off a 14-1 run to end the third quarter with a 72-20 advantage. Wayne sailed on from there collecting the decisive win and moving on to the second round. VanScyoc led the Pirates with 6 points.

“It’s not hard to keep our guys focused,” said Coach Trice. “It’s one and done at this point. We are not taking advantage of thinking about anyone we are playing. We are not looking at their record; we are focusing on what we have to do to get better.”

“Especially for us seniors we are looking at it as we only have seven games left,” said senior captain Demond Parker. “This will be the last time we will play with this group ever again. We have to keep our focus and keep that in mind.”

Wayne will play Stebbins Tuesday, Feb.23, 6 p.m. at Centerville High School in the second round of the sectional tournament.
