TROY — On Tuesday, October 17 the Wayne Warriors soccer team entered the Southwest District Division 1 Sectional Soccer Tournament hoping to upset Troy for the second time this season.
The Troy team came out strong on their home field and got on the scoreboard first and then got another quick goal when Nathan Kleptz crossed the ball to Alex Bridge who knocked in the pass giving the Troy team a 2-0 lead which they were able to hold until halftime.
The second half found the Warriors expending a lot of energy trying to score and after some near misses their persistence paid off when the Troy keeper mishandled a shot and Mitchell Hawley was able to beat him to the ball and knock it home giving the Warriors some hope. The Warrior fans in attendance and the great cheerleading squad did their best to get Wayne pumped up but unfortunately the next goal was not scored by the Warriors as Alex Bridge sent a ball across the field to Connor Hubbell whose header just beat the Warriors keeper and sealed the victory.
The Troy team would add 1 more score with 10 minutes left in the game when Bailey Webb spun and shot a ball into the corner of the net. That would be the final score and the 4-1 victory for Troy keeps them alive in the tournament and ends the season for the Wayne Warriors. The Warriors finished 6-10-1 on the season. Nate Johnson led the Warriors with 10 goals on the season, Mitchell Hawley had seven assists and Simon Oberkrom posted five shutouts for the Wayne squad.
This also marked the end of an era as Head Coach Dennis Snider is retiring after 25 seasons as the Warrior coach. Coach Snider will still be coaching in the area for the Metro FC Futbol Club.
