HUBER HEIGHTS — Wayne got it going early and rolled to an easy 90-38 win over Northwestern Pioneers (Indiana) Saturday night. The Warriors defense harassed the young Pioneers all night crating turnovers and numerous points in transition.
“We knew they were young when they came over. I’ve known the coach for several years he just got the job over there. They were looking for a game. We were looking for a game that fit the time frame and for us it’s more about getting into shape, more about our conditioning.”
Wayne definitely got some conditioning in last night as it was running the floor on both sides making plays. Isaiah Trice worked the offensive and defensive boards pulling down rebounds to start breaks on the defensive side and getting put backs on the offensive side.
L’Christian Smith was a force to be reckoned with on offense and defense as well. Smith came alive late in the third quarter and into the fourth. He dazzled the crowd with Sports Center highlight real plays over a 4-minute span.
On one defensive stand Smith grabbed a rebound dribbled through the defense the length on the floor and ended the drive with a spinning cross over and a dunk over the defender. The next Wayne offensive possession Smith came in to clean up a missed shot by jumping and putting in back with a two handed slam.
Wayne (2-0) has another home game coming up next when it will host the Beavercreek Beavers (1-0). Beavercreek opened its season at home with a thrilling 70-69 overtime victory over Springfield.
