COLUMBUS — Wayne’s track team had a successful weekend at the state meet in Columbus this past weekend.
Senior Madison Doss placed 8th in the 400 meter dash clocking a time of 57.40 seconds topping her 57.88 in the semifinals. She also placed 5th in the 400 at state last year and was a member of the 8th place finishing 4×400 relay team during her sophomore year (Doss, Aisha Griffin, Kiersten Hook, Ayana Williams – 3:56.01).
“What Madi did was impressive, qualifying to the state meet the past three years and placing all three years,” said Wayne Coach Michael Fernandez. “We know how hard it is just to qualify to the state meet, and for her to accomplish this, just speaks volume for her hard work and dedication to this sport her entire career.”
Sophomore Taylor Robertson became only the third female Warrior to place at the state meet in the long jump (Dawn Preyor and British Smith), by placing 8th leaping 17 feet, 5.5 inches.
“For being her first state meet, Taylor jumped like a true veteran,” Fernandez said. “ What makes her so fun to coach is that she always wants to get better each time out. When she realized she placed and was going to the podium, I think right there was a moment she knew what she accomplished. She has the tools to become one of the best to ever come out of our program.”
The men’s 4×400 meter relay team of Damon Roberts, Jalil Pollard, Treyvion Higgins and Elijah Hill placed 8th. The quartet ran 3:21.90 to place 9th in the semifinals on Friday, then came back and ran 3:21.68 in the finals to place 8th.
“This relay wanted to show they belonged, and placing from lane 9 was a statement,” Fernandez stated. “Damon, a senior, ran two perfect legs each day. He was the catalyst that put us in position every time he runs. We switched and put Jalil second leg, and he came through by keeping us in the mix. Senior Treyvion Higgins ran his best race in the finals, while junior Elijah Hill, our anchor leg, did enough to keep us in the top eight.”
