KETTERING — Trey Landers scored 19 points to lead Wayne to an 88-51 rout of Fairmont in a Greater Western Ohio Conference Central Division matchup Tuesday night.
Wayne clicked on all cylinders as six different Warriors scored in double figures to contribute to the win. Landers led the way with 19 points followed by Kenny Couch with 15, Demond Parker 12, L’Christian Smith 11 while Chazz George and Roderick Caldwell added 10 points each to lead Wayne to their 29th consecutive victory and a perfect 21-0 record. The win clinches the GWOC Central Division title for Wayne (9-0) with just one game remaining.
“I’m proud of our guys,” said Coach Travis Trice. “I’m proud of the effort we got, I’m proud of the effort we got from the guys off the bench. The starters came out and set the tone right away, we are getting Chazz George up and running, he had a double-double tonight, 10 points, 10 rebounds, he is getting healthier by the week, as he gets healthy I think it’s going to add another dimension to our team as well. I’m pretty proud of what our guys did tonight.”
Wayne as expected hit the court running and moved out to a 7-1 lead as Caldwell threw a picture perfect alley-oop pass to George for the slam dunk to get the show rolling. George then scored on two consecutive possessions hitting a 3-pointer and then scoring off an offensive rebound to go up 12-6. Fairmont responded with Dylan Crutchfield basket and two Darius Dunson free throws to close the gap to 12-10 at the 3:41 mark in the first quarter. Wayne and Fairmont traded baskets to make the score 14-12 with 2:33 left in the quarter. At that point Wayne turned on the jets fueled by two consecutive steals that were turned into scores by Parker and Landers culminating in a Scott Lute 3-pointer to end the quarter with a 26-14 advantage.
Wayne controlled the second quarter putting together a 7-0 run as Caldwell scored on hop step to the hoop and Landers got a steal and slammed it home with a dunk to sail into halftime with a commanding 49-27 lead.
The Warriors continued their dominance in the third quarter putting together a 21-2 run and added a swarming defense that held Fairmont to just five points. A Demond Parker 3-pointer, another dunk by the University of Dayton commit Landers and a sweet around the back move by Couch to score a bucket helped to push the Warriors to a more than comfortable 71-32 advantage at the end of the third quarter.
It was lights out from there as Wayne continued their winning ways cruising to another GWOC victory and remained undefeated on the season with a 21-0 record overall and 9-0 in the division. Fairmont dropped to 5-16 (1-8). Leading scorers for Fairmont were Kamron Drollet and Kellon Bochenek contributing 9 points each.
“It’s hard to score when we play that kind of defense,” Trice said. “Our defense was swarming, we were challenging shots, we were staying in front of people, we weren’t giving up lay ups. You can always run more when you’re taking it off the glass or getting a deflection. Tonight was a great game for us, our energy level was high and we used more guys off the bench, we kept that energy level high.”
Wayne will host Centerville Friday, Feb.12, 7:30 p.m. in the final game of the regular season.
