SPRINGFIELD — Wayne girls overcame a slow start to go on to a 58-28 rout of Springfield in a Greater Western Ohio Conference Central Division contest Saturday afternoon.
Three Warriors were in double figures led by Shai McGruder with 20 points followed by Destiny Bohanon 15 points and Maya Dunson added 11 points to power Wayne to the decisive victory. McGruder also had five blocks and was effective on the glass for the Warriors.
“McGruder was definitely finishing at the basket,” said Coach Sonya Miller. “She was on the boards, that was a lot of our surge as she was sprinting the floor as she does very, very well. Maya Dunson had 11 points, her passing and her assists, being able to see the floor; she is pretty much an all-around player for us and there are not a lot of them. You have to have that on your team, she showed up excellent for us today. They are coming into their own and they know were each other will be on the floor.”
Wayne started slow as Springfield battled to keep the score close at 12-7 to end the first quarter. Wayne started the second quarter in high gear going on a 19-0 run that featured four consecutive steals (two by Olivia Trice, one each from Destiny Bohanon and Shenell Parker) that were turned into fast break baskets to take a 33-12 advantage into half-time.
“One of the things we keep harping on is that we have to be ready for every game, no matter who the opponent is, “said Coach Miller concerning the slow start. “Part of that run was to get them moving; they were sluggish in the first quarter so we kept changing the defense up. Sometimes when you’re young that’s wear maturity has to step in, but also we have to coach them through it. I try to be as patient as possible.”
The Warriors surged ahead once again in the third quarter putting together a 12-2 run and take their largest lead of 29 points. To cap off the quarter Dunson connected on a 3-pointer at the buzzer that was launched from just beyond the half court line to extend the lead to 47-19. From that point it was all Wayne as they cruised to their twelfth consecutive victory and improved to 13-1, 3-0 in the Central Division. Springfield dropped to 2-11 and 0-3. T’erra Eubanks was a bright spot for Springfield leading the team in scoring with 19 points and had two 3-pointers.
“We have to continue to focus on defense, “said Coach Miller. “We are still learning the defensive game, which in my opinion is our weakest part of the game. It’s understanding the entire game not just about the offensive side; you have to work on defense to create offense. That’s what we will be working on not only for the upcoming Fairmont game, but also the Shaker Heights game in the Classic.”
Wayne will host Fairmont Wednesday, Jan. 13 at 7:30 p.m. in their next central division contest then will face Shaker Heights in the Classic in the Country Challenge Sunday, Jan. 17 at 6:40 p.m. in Millersburg, Ohio.
