SIDNEY — — Brady Paxton scored the winning goal for Wayne in the second round of the sectional tournament Saturday night at Sidney as Wayne edged the hosts 1-0.
With 20 minutes left in the game, Austin Marler was on the end of the cross and the goalie came out to play the ball. Paxton, who was next to Marler, took one touch and put the ball in the back of the net.
“Scoring the winning goal against Sidney was a great moment for me,” said Paxton. “The feeling was amazing. I loved being able to help my team win a very tough game. I couldn’t have done it without my team.”
“It was exciting,” said Wayne Coach Dennis Snider. “It was an intense game and the kids got really excited when they scored. We were holding on at the end. We played well.”
“Winning the second round of the tournament is a very pleasing accomplishment and we’re going to play our hardest in the third game against Beavercreek and go from there.”
Wayne will face Beavercreek at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Northmont. Wayne fell to Beavercreek 2-0 on Sept. 15 on the road, scoring on a corner kick and a set play.
“If we can do well against that, it should be a good match,” said Snider.
Beavercreek is 13-1-4 while Wayne improved to 9-7-2. After a four game loosing streak, Wayne has won their last three games, including a 6-0 regular season finale win against Edgewood and a 4-1 tournament win against Tecumseh.
