CENTERVILLE — The Wayne Cross Country team continued their season at the Centerville Saturday Night Lights this past weekend. The boys team competed very well against some very tough competition, according to Wayne Coach Todd Anderson and finished fifth out of 26 teams, finishing in their fastest team average of the year.
“The varsity boys team had an outstanding race,” said Anderson. “We wanted to focus on competing during the entire race and we achieved that very well. This was a tough meet and we rose to the occasion.”
The boys were led once again by Jared Wamsley, who went under 17 minutes again (16:58) and finished eighth overall.
“It was nice to see Jared under the 17 minute mark for the second time this season,” said Anderson. “He ran a much more determined race this time.”
Junior Jacob Miller finished second for the Warriors (19th overall) in a time of 17:37, followed by freshman Lucas Houk, who took off 30 seconds from his previous personal record (PR) and finished in 26th (17:45). “
“Jacob Miller has been steady for the last couple of meets, I look for him to breakthrough very shortly,” said Anderson. “Lucas had his best race of the season. He was definitely determined to do well and it showed in his performance.”
Freshman Robert Cole (18:47), Alex Showers (20:02) and Travis Colton (20:42) rounded out the varsity scoring for Wayne. “The team is coming around at the right time of the season. We have three weeks until GWOC Championships and we are competing very well.”
The cross country team will continue their season on Saturday at the Buck Creek Invitational in Springfield.
