CENTERVILLE — The Wayne girls cross country team placed 21st overall at the Centerville Saturday Night Lights this past weekend as many runners established a new personal best in the meet.
Sophomore Kristen Hoelscher led the team, dropping almost a minute to finish in 23:09 followed by senior Jackie Thomas in 24:20.
“The was by far the best race that I’ve seen from these two girls,” said Wayne Coach Todd Anderson. “They both did what I wanted them to do in the race and ran more determined the whole time and running the first mile a lot faster than any time before. It was impressive to see.”
Senior Natalie Austin (24:52) finished third for Wayne, followed by Abigail Kerestes, Mikki Holmes and Rebekah Spence.
“The girls are still improving their times every meet,” said Anderson. “We are finishing with a varsity average faster than what the team has completed the past several years. I’m proud of what they have done already this season and hope to see even more improvement.”
The cross country team will continue their season on Saturday at the Buck Creek Invitational in Springfield.
