MIAMISBURG — Five different players scored touchdowns as Wayne defeated host Miamisburg 49-14 in a Greater Western Conference battle of unbeaten teams at Harmon Field.
Both Wayne and Miamisburg came into the contest with 4-0 records, but it was Wayne that came away with a decisive victory, improving to 5-0 while Miamisburg dropped to 4-1. Wayne showed they are not a one dimensional team as they received contributions from a myriad of different weapons both in the passing game and ground attack. Wayne accumulated 229 yards passing and 273 yards rushing to combine for an impressive 502 yards of total offense on the night.
On Wayne’s first possession and first play, quarterback Messiah DeWeaver delivered a rocket pass to L’Christian Smith in tight coverage for a 54-yard touchdown with 10:13 left in the first quarter to make the score 7-0.
“L’Christian made a great play, “said DeWeaver. “He made me look good.”
DeWeaver connected again, this time on a double clutch pass to Matt Wilcox in the left corner of the end zone with 4:58 left in the first quarter to make the score 14-0.
According to DeWeaver this was his favorite play of the night.
“It was hitch and go, “said DeWeaver. “We hooked up perfectly.”
“Our goal is to go 1-0 every week, “said DeWeaver. “Never overlook anybody, try to get better every day.”
DeWeaver, the Michigan State commit, connected on 14 of 18 passing attempts for 229 yards and three touchdowns.
On Wayne’s next possession, Daryl McCleskey took the hand off and rambled 31 yards for a touchdown with 1:06 remaining in the first quarter to make the score 21-0.
Wayne continued to force its will on Miamisburg by sustaining a 15-play drive to set up a Antwand Wilson 5-yard run through the middle for a touchdown with 6:58 remaining in the second quarter to put Wayne up 28-0.
Wayne kept its foot on the gas pedal as Wilcox got his second touchdown of the night on an explosive 80-yard run with 2:35 left in the second quarter to give Wayne a 35-0 advantage.
Miamisburg finally got a break recovering a Wayne fumble on a mishandled punt. Miamisburg capitalized on the Wayne turnover as sophomore Jay Vinson ran for a 15-yard touchdown with 46 seconds left in the second quarter to cut the lead to 35-7.
On the very next possession Wayne immediately rebounded as DeWeaver connected on 58-yard touchdown pass to McCleskey with 21 seconds left in the half to put Wayne ahead 42-7.
In the fourth quarter, two strong runs by Foster and Wilson set up Wayne’s final touchdown on a 9-yard run by Fred Pitts with 10:29 left in the fourth quarter to extend the Wayne lead to 49-7.
Miamisburg scored one last time on a 2-yard Vinson run with 4:07 left in the game to cut Wayne’s lead to 49-14, the final margin of victory.
“It felt good to get the win, “said Wayne Coach Jay Minton. “You never take a win for granted, our guys executed so well, we have so much more to give, it will be scary when we put it all together.”
Wayne will be on the road to battle Springfield at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 2.
