HUBER HEIGHTS-Friday night’s football game will pit the only two undefeated teams left in the Greater Western Ohio Conference as undefeated Wayne (Central Division) will visit the South Division’s only undefeated team, Miamisburg.
Miamisburg opened the season with a 28-6 victory against Thurgood Marshall. In week two, they edged Fairmont 30-27 in overtime. That was followed by a 43-15 win against Troy. On Friday, Miamisburg edged Springfield 13-12.
Wayne Coach Jay Minton said his team is taking this match-up “real serious.”
“The big thing is that they are finding a way to win,” he said. “Supposedly, they don’t have as much talent as they had last year. However, they’re finding a way to win. Their kids believe they can win and to beat us would set their program right on top.”
Minton said Miamisburg is real disciplined and runs a wing T offense which he called a “highly misdirection offense.”
“We’ve got to go out and execute and again, play better than we did last week…,” said Minton. “We’re challenging our kids to play your best and when you’ve played your best, play better. And if we can keep that mentality, then I think we can build towards the end of the season. But, this is going to be a big game for us because it has a lot of points…if you want to host a playoff game. We’ve got a lot riding on it too.”
Miamisburg features standout junior offensive lineman Josh Myers whom Minton called “one of the best lineman in the country. Minton said Miamisburg’s quarterback and running backs play within their system and “they work the system really well.”
“When you think of Miamisburg right now, you think of a system,” said Minton. “We know that we have to beat Miamisburg, because we have to beat that system. Our guys will be prepared. But, they can present you problems if you’re not ready for it.”
On the season, Wayne quarterback Messiah DeWeaver has 767 yards passing, completing 45 of 73 passes with six TDs. Miamisburg’s Jake Schoenberger has completed 20 of 42 passes for 341 yards, three TDs and one interception. L’Christian Smith has 13 receptions for 301 yards and four TDs while Daryl McCleskey has eight receptions for 234 yards and two TDs. Matt Wilcox has 16 catches for 186 yards and one TD. Miamisburg’s Tyler Johnson has 11 receptions for 215 yards and three TDs.
Fred Pitts has 43 carries for 339 yards and four TDs. Miamisburg’s Jake Ross has 61 carries for 329 yards and six TDs while Tony Clark has 37 carries for 232 yards and three TDs. Xavien Jones has 11 carries for 219 yards and two TDs and Davon Calloway has 40 carries for 219 yards and two TDs.
