HUBER HEIGHTS — Veteran Wayne track coach Mike Fernandez was a member of the Games Committee for the 2015 State Track and Field Tournament held at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium at The Ohio State University on June 5-6.
This is the first year that Fernandez has been selected to be on the Games Committee at the state meet.
“Usually, the committee isn’t used, but is a necessity of the state tournament,” he said. “It’s something that I think after years of coaching that I was able to be considered for it. I’ve been on the games committee at meets before, but never in the capacity of a state meet (all three divisions).
Fernandez was asked to be on the committee this year.
“It’s a pretty big deal, because we are the last voice of any major ruling or decision that wasn’t figured out by the officials,” he said.
The Games Committee usually contains the meet referee, field event referee, and several officials from the four regions, two head coaches and Dale Gabor, head liaison for the Ohio High School Athletic Association.
Fernandez said the Games Committee actually had to meet for a ruling before the meet started related to a pole vault issue, which he indicated was the first time the committee has met in the last five years.
