HUBER HEIGHTS — Wayne High School seniors Haleigh Russell and Alex Otto have been named the Huber Heights Rotary Scholastic Athletic Award winners for September.
Russell, the daughter of John and Shannon Russell, is a member of the Wayne girls soccer team and serves as Miss Wayne and has a 4.29 grade point average. She is a member of the Wayne High School Student Council, the National Honor Society and Senior Cabinet. She is actively involved in her church youth group and plans to study social work in college.
“I participate in soccer because it is a team sport,” she said. “The players on the field are the coaches because there are no timeouts. We fight for one another no matter the cost. I love that the game of soccer can turn so quickly. You could be down 1-0 and score and still be in the game. My favorite thing is the bond of the team.”
Russell said she looks up to her mother.
“…She has poured into my life since the day I was born,” she said. “She has taught me how to be a woman of God and speak kind words to all around me. She has supported me and encouraged me in every activity that I have participated in. I hope to be half the woman she is as I grow up.”
Otto, the son of Glenn and Andi Otto, competes in football and track and field. Otto sports a 4.5 grade point average and plans to graduate from college with a master’s degree in mechanical engineering and enroll in the Army.
“I love being physically active and I respect the work, dedication and sacrifices made by each player on the field,” he said.
Otto said he looks up to his parents.
“They are very involved in the community and are dedicated to everything they do,” he said. “They inspire each other to become better individuals and they show respect to everyone whether they’re friends or complete strangers.”
The Huber Heights Rotary Scholastic Athletic Award is awarded monthly to Wayne High School athletes.
The winner must have a 3.0 grade point average and be a student athlete of good standing at Wayne High School that is considered to be a role model for other students.
