FAIRMONT — The Wayne golf team placed 12th out of 19 teams at the Fairmont Firebird Invitational Tournament at the NCR Country Club South Course on Tuesday, Sept. 8. Springboro, Butler and Lakota East were the top three team finishers with 298, 300 and a 304.
Bryce Haney (44-37) and James Harness (39-42) paced Wayne with an 81. Zach Johnson shot an 85 (38-47) while A.J. Henry (46-47) and Riley Brown (48-45) each had a 93. Hunter Vaughn also competed.
Soukup said they played the championship course, which was tougher than Wayne is used to playing with a lot of tree line fairways. He said that Harness, Johnson and Haney all had some great 10 or 12 hole stretches, but experienced problems on some of the other holes. He said Johnson was 10 over on two holes and that if he eliminates the really big mistakes, he’d be “right back in the top of things.”
“We’re having a tough time right now stringing a full 18 holes together as a team,” said Soukup.
On Thursday, Fairmont defeated Wayne 155-159 in spite of Wayne having their lowest nine-hole score of the year.
“It would have been nice to win, being at home, having a little big of advantage,” said Soukup. “But, unfortunately, we just couldn’t put it together tonight — we just got beat.”
Haney shot a 37 while Johnson and Harness shot a 38. Henry had a 46, while Brown and Vaughn had a 47 and 49, respectively.
“My top three finally played good on the same night,” said Wayne Coach Jon Soukup. “My four man struggled a little bit and shot a little bit above his average.”
Wayne will compete at the Hadley Fall Classic on Saturday at Weatherwax.
