BEAVERCREEK —The Wayne boys golf team took third place at the Diana Schwab Invitational last Tuesday at the Beavercreek Golf Club with a 168 behind champion Beavercreek (157) and runner-up Fairmont (166).
Bryce Haney paced Wayne with a 39, a score shared with five other golfers. Alex Flick of Beavercreek was medalist at 36 whild Middletown’s Nathan Campbell shot a 37.
James Harness shot a 41 while AJ Henry shot a 42 and Zach Johnson a 46 to account for the team scoring. Riley Brown shot a 50. Seth Marks also competed for Wayne.
On Thursday, Wayne fell to host Northmont 170-183 at Meadowbrook of Clayton. Wayne Coach Jon Soukup said that was Wayne’s worst score in at least three years, about 22 strokes above their average for four golfers.
Harness shot a 41 while Haney and Johnson had a 46. Henry shot a 50. Brown and Hunter Vaughn also competed.
Soukup said this performance was partly because of Northmont’s home course advantage, but also because the players we’re “not taking it seriously.” Soukup said that issue was addressed and the team played a lot better on Saturday at the Chase Knecht Memorial at Weatherwax Golf Club where the squad placed 12th out of 22 teams with a 336, a score that Soukop said he was “very pleased with” considering their performance at Northmont.
Haney shot a 75 and tied for fourth place overall. He was 1-under-par with four holes remaining, but bogeyed his last four holes.
“So, if he just makes par on one of those holes, he gets in a playoff for first,” said Soukup. ‘He just missed the playoff by one stroke.”
“He’s done a great job,” added Soukup. “He’s been in competition for a victory three out of the four tournaments we’ve played in…He just can’t close the deal.”
Cameron Willis, of Eaton, was the medalist with a 74.
Johnson shot an 83 while Henry had an 85 and Harness a 91.
The Wayne girls golf team placed seventh out of eight teams at the Diana Schwab Invitational on Tuesday at the Beavercreek Golf Club. Wayne shot a 230 to place ahead of Butler who shot a 230. CJ took top honors with a 167 while Lebanon was runner-up (182) and Northmont was third (194).
Wayne’s Heidi Weeks tied for 27th with a 56 while Jennifer Hammond took 30th with a 57. Bailey Massey was 31st with a 58 while Lauren Daily tied for 34th with a 59 to account for the team score. Also competing were Sydney Steckel and Kelsey Fitzpatrick.
