WEST MILTON — The Wayne Cross Country team competed at the Bob Schul Invitational on Saturday at Milton-Union High School. The boys team placed ninth out of 25 teams while the girls were 19th out of 25 schools represented.
Leading the way for the boys squad was senior Jared Wamsley who finished 10th overall in a time of 17:02.
“Jared had an outstanding race,” said Coach Todd Anderson. “He kept his pace in control for the first mile which resulted in a much stronger finish. With almost 400 athletes running, placing in the top 10 is a huge accomplishment.”
Junior Jacob Miller (18:22), freshmen Robert Cole (18:55) and Lucas Houk (19:05), along with sophomore Daniel Cole (19:36) finished the scoring for the Warriors.
“These runners also had a great race against some tough competition,” said Anderson. “Finishing in the top 10 as a team at a meet of this caliber shows that all of our hard work is paying off.”
Alex Showers, Treven Cade, Travis Colton and Brian Mackey were just a couple of seconds behind the top five to provide some added depth for the team.
“Those top five can’t get too comfortable because we have some friendly team competition for the varsity squad,” said Anderson.
The girls team was led by sophomore Kristen Hoelscher who finished the 5k in 25:17, followed closely by senior Natalie Austin (25:20). “
These two ran as a team in this race and it provided an extra boost for the girls,” said Anderson. “Each achieved a new PR.”
Jackie Thomas, Abigail Kerestes, and Mikki Holmes rounded out the scoring for the Warriors.
“I’m very impressed with how the girls ran this meet,” said Anderson. “They have really started to get into the competition and are determined to keep improving their times.”
The cross country team will be in action twice this week. On Wednesday they will run at the Fairborn Invitational, held at Community Park and then on Saturday, they will be at the Miamisburg Invitational held at Medlar View Elementary.
