HUBER HEIGHTS — The Wayne girls soccer team opened the season Saturday night at home with a 3-0 shutout against Xenia.
“I thought we played well,” said Coach Vic Trapani. “We need to still keep working and the girls realize that, but we did a lot of nice things. This early in the season, they’re passing well and I think it’s probably one of our better passing teams up to this point.”
Team senior captains Madison Doss and Chiara Baker each had a goal while Haleigh Russell had an assist.
The goal by Doss came with 32:27 remaining in the first half on a direct kick off of a free kick.
Trapani said that Doss has a “pretty good leg” and “has the go-ahead to take those longer shots on the goal if she thinks she can put one in.” He said she hit a “beautiful shot” in the upper left hand corner from about 33 yards out.
Baker scored the second goal on an assist from Russell.
“We’ve been telling our two center-mids, they need to find each other,” said Trapani. ‘Haley put that ball right on Chiara’s foot and she buried it, so both of them did their job there.”
Sophomore midfielder Ashley Ruble added the third goal while senior forward Alexcis Jordan had the assist.
“Ashley did a nice job and Alexcis got her the ball,” said Trapani. “We’ve been trying to tell the outside mids which Ashley plays, to try to dribble laterally across the field and she did that —she dribbled herself right into a seam where she could take a shot. Again, she did her job and she found the back of the net.”
Xenia was limited to two shots on goal as Ashley Flohre had two saves. Wayne had 22 shots, nine of which were on goal.
Russell said she is expecting the team to have a “really good season because we only lost four seniors last year.”
“So the whole team has chemistry and I think that is really important in the game,” said Russell.
Baker said she is expecting hard work for every practice and every game and “mostly just playing as a team and playing together and supporting each other through everything.”
Wayne is slated to travel to Miamisburg tonight and to Fairborn Wednesday and to Shawnee on Saturday.
