HUBER HEIGHTS — The Wayne girls golf team opened the season on Aug. 10 at Greenville with a 243, falling to host Greenville (218) and Piqua (226). On Aug. 17, Wayne traveled to Lebanon where they fell 223-170.
“We’re doing better with each round,” said Coach Stephanie Yount. “From last week to this week, all of them cut strokes off of their game and scored better than they did last week. That’s all I can hope for — is a little improvement each week.”
Sophomore Heidi Weeks is Wayne’s top player and is ranked in the top 40 in the Greater Western Ohio Conference after shooting a 112 (60-52) in the Girls Pre-Season GWOC Tournament.
“We’re just a very young team,” said Yount.
The team sports two seniors. Sydney Steckel played last year and is improving each week, according to Yount. Bailey Massey, who also plays softball, is talented and very athletic and is in the top four Wayne golfers, added Yount.
Other sophomores include Lauren Daily, Jennifer Hammond and Kelsey Fitzpatrick. Hammond is expected to be Wayne’s number two golfer.
Fitzpatrick, Hammond, Dailey and Massey are first time golfers getting acquainted with the sport and are improving.
Last year, Wayne had four golfers in the program with three at most matches.
“So to be able to have six and compete this year is a big deal,” said Yount. “At least we’ll be able to go out and not have to forfeit matches.”
Wayne is slated to host Beavercreek on Aug. 19, travel to Butler on Aug. 24 and host Middletown Fenwick on Aug. 25 and Northmont on Aug. 26.
