HEBRON — The Wayne Cross Country team started their season on Saturday at the OHSAA PreSeason Invitational held at National Trail Raceway in Hebron. The boys team finished 21st out of 23 teams in the Varsity Division and the girls finished 17th out of 19 teams in the Open Division.
“This is one of the fastest races that we will compete in the very first week of the season,” said Wayne coach Todd Anderson. “Teams travel from all over the state to compete here which was very evident by the fast times. Even though we didn’t place very high as a team, we had some great times for us and our level of experience.”
The boys were led by senior Jared Wamsley who ran a personal best of 17:20 to place 46th overall. Junior Jacob Miller followed in a personal best time of 18:05.
“Having both Jared and Jacob both run the fastest times of their careers in their first race shows the work that they put in this summer,” said Anderson. “They will continue to get better this season.”
Freshmen Alex Showers (20:28) and Robert Cole (21:06) were the next top finishers for the team, running their first high school race.
Rounding out the varsity race finishers on the team were sophomore Daniel Cole (21:20), then juniors Treven Cade (22:04), Travis Colton (22:07) and Brian Mackey (23:50).
“We have a group of runners who are very close to one another,” said Anderson. “I see them pushing each other all season. We have some work to do though because we need those runners at least under 20 minutes to be real competitive as a team.”
The boys JV team also competed in the invitational in the open division.
“It is nice to have enough boys on the team to be able to compete in both races,” said Anderson. “This is good for the future of the program because we have a lot of runners.”
Finishing first for the JV team was freshman Vincent Statzer followed by sophomores Noah McGeorge and Kareen Taylor. Rounding out the JV team was freshmen JoMarre Young, Harley Marcum and Jacob Reinhart.
On the girls side, they finished 17th with only two girls who have competed in a cross country race before. The team was led by Kristen Hoelscher (26:26) and seniors Natalie Austin (27:44) and Jackie Thomas (28:11).
“This was a good race for our top girl runners,” said Anderson. “It was good for them to see the type of competition that they will be dealing with all season.”
Finishing the scoring for the team was Abigail Kerestes, Rebekah Spence, Dominica Holmes, Muskan Chander, and Aramis Williamson.
The team will have a weekend off and then will continue their season at the Bob Schul Invitational at Milton-Union High School on Saturday, Aug. 29.
