Vote for Mr. Sanders in Janitor of the Year contest

Susan Gunnell - Superintendent, Huber Heights City Schools

Vote for Sanders — Mr. Bill Sanders that is! Mr. Sanders, custodian at Wright Brothers Elementary School, has been chosen as one of only ten national finalists for the “Janitor of the Year” contest. This contest, sponsored by the Cintas Corporation and now in its third year, recognizes the very best in janitors from elementary, middle, high school, and colleges. The Cintas Corporation asks staff and students to nominate their school’s custodian by writing a short essay describing why their school’s janitor deserves the award. Cintas reads the nominations and selects the ten finalists. This year there were more than 600 essays submitted to the Cintas Corporation for consideration. The winning janitor will receive a cash prize of $5,000 and an additional $5,000 in Cintas and Rubbermaid Commercial Products supplies and services for his/her school. The nine runners-up will receive $500.

Reprinted below is the bio listed on the Cintas “Janitor of the Year” voting page for Mr. Bill Sanders:

“Not only does “Mr. Bill” whistle while he works, he somehow manages to do it with a smile at the same time! His upbeat personality is refreshing to both students and staff as he always has a kind, positive and thoughtful word, no matter what kind of day he is having. He also has the uncanny ability to know when teachers or students need their sprits lifted – whether with a simple friendly hello, a high-five or a special treat. Speaking of treats, each Friday he delivers over 100 “Love in a Bag” gifts to students to ensure they have something to eat over the weekend. Bill goes the extra mile to not only keep the building clean and safe for students, but safe for teachers and visitors as well. In fact, Bill can often be seen walking teachers to their cars at night and after conferences. Bill also helps to reinforce the school’s curriculum by playing the part of the Leprechaun on St Patrick’s Day. And perhaps best of all, each December he dresses up as the gingerbread man, in a costume he made, and runs around on the roof of the building to entertain students – in spite of the cold Ohio weather and his extreme fear of heights.”
