Last week, I wrote about how parents and students can begin to prepare for the costs associated with attending college. This week I want to write about how students can use scholarships as a financial resource to help with college expenses.
One thing students and parents can do is locate available scholarships. A starting point is the Wayne High School home page. Click on the link to the Guidance Department and you will find links to both college and scholarship resources. Another good resource is the Dayton Foundation, “ScholarshipCONNECT” (www.daytonfoundation.org). The Dayton Foundation is able to offer more than 130 scholarship opportunities to help Dayton-area students continue their education. ScholarshipCONNECT is a scholarship and college readiness resource website to help students get to and through college. Last year, approximately 1,400 area students received $1.4 million in scholarships awarded by 170 Dayton Foundation funds to help with education expenses.
It is important to start your search for scholarships as soon as possible and be sure to apply to every scholarship for which you are eligible. Look at pursuing less competitive scholarships, such as small awards and essay contests, since these may be easier to win. The money from these smaller scholarships can add up quickly and can help you win bigger scholarships. Be sure to read and follow the scholarship instructions very carefully and tailor your application to fit the sponsor’s goals. Don’t miss deadlines. Your application will usually not be considered if it is late. Lastly, be sure to proofread a printed copy of your essay and your application for spelling and grammar errors and, make sure you submit everything the application requires, including any references
Remember, scholarships are funds that do not have to be repaid to the provider so applying for scholarships is well worth your time and effort.
