From the A.D.’s desk: great vs. good

Jay Minton - Wayne HS Athletics Director

Have you ever wondered what this means? Well in athletics it means that when you or your team is good at something, then don’t be satisfied with that, you should always try to be great at what you do.

Being great wins championships and it also relates to success in life. We are not saying that being good is bad and sometimes you can only be good. However, we should always strive in life to be great at whatever we are doing.

So many stop and settle for just being good. There are a bunch of goods out there, but the ones who keep pushing become great!

There is a poem that goes along with this that we have always loved. “Good, better, best. Never let it rest. Until your good is better and your better is best.” This quote by Tim Duncan talks about how to be great! Shouldn’t we all strive to be the best at whatever we do…remember, not everyone can be the best or be great, but what is the most important part of this is that you keep pressing on and you never give up and that we all try to get better at what we do.

Jerry West once told me, “If you ever stop trying to be your best or be great at what you are doing and if you ever think you know it all about what you are doing, then quit doing it, because pretty soon you will not even be good at it anymore.” When I was 10 years old, he told me this at his basketball camp. I can honestly say it has stuck with me all throughout my life. Have a great week and hope to see you all at Homecoming! Go Wayne!
