Dayton Metro Library’s new mascots need names

The Dayton Metro Library mascot and its sidekick don’t yet have names. The public is invited to choose their names by voting online or in person at all Dayton Metro Library locations, now through July 15.

DAYTON — The newest members of the Dayton Metro Library family are a mascot and its sidekick, but they don’t yet have names.

The public is invited to choose their names by voting online or in person at all Dayton Metro Library locations, now through July 15. Winning names will be announced when the mascots are introduced to the public at the Library’s Party in the Park on August 8.

A Library committee reviewed several creative concepts for the mascot and provided input on the character’s personality and physical traits.

“Our new mascot is a friendly make-believe creature who is passionate about literacy and learning,” said Diane Farrell, Director of External Relations and Development. “It will be like a fun, slightly older sibling or friend to children ages 12 and younger. The fact that it’s a completely made-up character speaks to children’s imaginations, where all things are possible,” she said.

The new mascot and its sidekick will meet the public for the first time at the Party in the Park on Saturday, August 8. This free community event celebrates the Library’s Summer Challenge with games, crafts, music and performances from 1:00-4:00 p.m. in Cooper Park, downtown Dayton. The mascots’ names will be revealed at the event.

“This is the perfect time for us to welcome a new mascot ambassador who will encourage children to enjoy reading, learning and all the fun activities the Library has to offer,” said Farrell. “Our educational services for children continue to expand along with our remodeled and new facilities, our new logo and our redesigned website. With our mascot, children will have a brand new friend at their Library.”

Paper ballots are available through July 15 at all Dayton Metro Libraries, or votes can be cast online at http://www.daytonmetrolibrary.org/mascot. For more information, call the Library at (397) 463-BOOK.
