HUBER HEIGHTS — Soccer is not the sport of choice at schools in the Dayton City League. That was obvious when Dunbar faced Wayne on Monday at Heidkamp Stadium.

Dunbar had just enough players to compete with no one available as a sub to relieve the 11 players on the field.

Wayne chose the right opponent for its Senior Night game, as all three senior offensive players scored and senior goalkeeper Ashley Flohre prevented Dunbar from scoring in an 11-0 victory.

Seniors Rayna Edwards, Emily Flohre, and Ashley Hegyi each scored one goal. Junior midfielder Ashley Ruble led the Lady Warriors with three goals, sophomore Hunter Houck netted two, sophomores Abreanna Shea and Mahlaila Hess had one goal and junior Aubree Duncan also had a goal.

Wayne assaulted the goal early and often to take an 8-0 lead at the half. Dunbar rarely got the ball out of its half of the field. In the spirit of good sportsmanship Wayne Coach Brad Hemphill instructed his players to make a designated number of passes on each possession in the second half before his players could attempt to score. That helped to keep the score down.

The victory was the Lady Warriors first of the season as Wayne improved to 1-9-3 overall and in the process almost tripled it season output of total goals scored. Entering the contest Wayne had generated four goals on the season.

“Yes, the goals finally came,” Hemphill chuckled. “Coming in we knew we were going to be the better of the two teams. We still wanted to make it a meaningful game. At times we played where we had to score after a certain restriction. Dunbar fought hard. They didn’t have any subs and none of their girls quit, so hats off to them. You can’t ask for anything better or anything more of those girls. They played the entire 80 minutes. They didn’t quit and they fought. We weren’t out to embarrass them. I’m very happy that we won. Ruble scored a hat trick and Hunter Houck had two goals. All of the seniors scored except for our goalie.”

Wayne has two regular season games remaining before entering sectional tournament play. The Lady Warriors open tournament play on Saturday, October 22 at 7 p.m. against the winner of the Northmont vs. Tecumseh match.
