HUBER HEIGHTS — What a way for Wayne to break a three-game losing streak.

After dropping two games to Centerville and one to Springboro last week, the host Warriors staged a huge 13-6 comeback win Saturday over non-league Northwestern on Senior Day.

The Warriors had dropped 5-0 and 3-0 decisions to the Elks and a 1-0 decision to the Panthers before scoring a home victory over Northwestern, improving its record to 10-14.

Wayne coach Joe Yount allowed the seven seniors to complete Saturday’s roster. Southpaw Riley Brown took the mound and Nick Chaffman played catcher. The other seniors in the lineup included Bryce Haney, James Harness, Austin Marler, Chase Perkins, and Logan Pelfrey.

The Warriors scored the first run. Harness doubled to lead off the second inning and Chaffman drove him home with the second double of the inning.

Northwestern answered with six unearned runs in the top of the third after three Warrior errors and four hits by the visitors. Trailing 6-1 in the bottom of the fifth, the Warriors got back into the game when Harness connected for a clutch three-run home run over the left field wall.

“Harness really got us going with his homer,” Wayne coach Joe Yount said.

The Warriors completely dominated the fifth and sixth innings, scoring 12 unanswered runs on 10 hits, two walks, a hit-by pitch and an error. After Harness hit his homer, the Warriors plated nine more runs as the squad batted around.

Harness, who is scheduled to pitch the Division I sectional opener at Fairborn, paced the Warriors with three hits and 5 RBI as the designated hitter. Brown and Marler each had two hits. Chaffman and Pelfrey had singles

Sophomore Dylan Donchez smacked a tape-measure two-run homer over the batting cage in left field.

Senior Day turned out to be a sweet success, according to Yount.

“All in all, a great day to be a Warrior,” he said.
