CENTERVILLE — Wayne’s varsity fast-pitch softball team played solid defense Monday but couldn’t generate much offense as the Lady Warriors lost to co-division leader Centerville, 5-0.
With the win Centerville improved to 8-1 in division play and 13-2 overall while Wayne fell to 5-4 and 12-10.
Lady Elks pitcher Mollie Paulick struck out 13 and allowed only three hits with one walk. Paulick also belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the second inning to help her own cause.
Paulick struck out a pair of Wayne batters in the top of the first and sent the side down in order.
In the home half of the first No. 2 hitter Taylor White legged out an infield hit and immediately stole second and made it all the way to third before the next pitch catching the Wayne defense sleeping. Paulick drew a walk and also stole second before the next pitch. Raquel Emery singled to right field to score White and Amanda Ross singled to to center to score the pinch runner to give Centerville a 2-0 lead.
Centerville increased its lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the third inning. White led off with a single to right and stole second. Paulick followed with a home run to center to make it 4-0. Ross got hit by a pitch and one out later Megan Dabbelt drove Ross in with a single to right to make it 5-0.
Wayne’s best scoring threat came in the top of the third inning. Mikaila Foy led off with a single and one out later Breanna Musick singled to right. Paulick ended the threat by getting the next batter to fly out to right and struck out the next to end the inning.
Defensively Morgan Santos made a nice double play in the top of the second. With one runner on base Santos snared a line drive and rifled the ball to first to catch the base runner off the bag.
“We put the bat on the ball but the strike zone was terrible at the least,” said Wayne Coach John Chesley. “We had a couple chances and you’ve got to take advantage of them against Paulick. If you don’t you are going to be in a five nothing game just like we were. Defensively we played good. I’m proud of the girls. We left a couple plays out there but besides that the girls played their hearts out.”
Breanna Musick led Wayne by going 2 for 3 and Mikaila Foy went 1 for 2.
Taylor White led Centerville by going 2 for 3 with a stolen base and scored one run. Mollie Paulick went 1 for 1 with a home run and two RBI. Amanda Ross went 1 for 1, got hit by a pitch and had one RBI. Megan Dabbelt went 1 for 3 with a walk and one RBI. Lizzy Leach and Sarah Garber also went 1 for 3 and Caroline Ferrazza went 1 for 2.
Wayne will host Centerville on Tuesday, Piqua Thursday and then concludes regular season play with a doubleheader Saturday at Miamisburg starting at 11a.m.
