CENTERVILLE — Wayne’s wrestling team did well Friday and Saturday at the Division I sectional tournament at Centerville High School with four Warriors qualifying outright, and one as an alternate to the upcoming district tournament.
Senior Tyler Haworth (195 pounds) won the sectional title by a fall (3:03) against Dylan Sagers of Vandalia-Butler.
Keyan Jumper (138 pounds) also a senior took second place losing a close 9-8 decision in the final to Gage Whitt of Tecumseh.
Sophomore Jordan Hardrick (152 pounds) also finished second losing by a fall (3:35) in the final to senior Andrew Asencio of Beavercreek.
Senior heavyweight Da’Beon Holt placed fourth losing a 4-2 decision in overtime to senior David Hughes of Beavercreek.
Freshman Zarik Brown placed fifth to qualify to district as an alternate, losing by a fall (0:38) to sophomore Reece Blackmore of Beavercreek.
“We had five place and I think we have a good chance of Zarik getting in,” said Wayne Coach Randy Bitsko. “It seems like every year there is one weight class that has something going on and I’m thinking Zarik might have a chance to get in, which would give us five guys moving on.”
If a wrestler in Brown’s weight class would get injured, sick or fails to make weight, he would then step-in to compete at district.
“Going in I thought we would probably have five or six advance,” Bitsko said. “We had a really great focus going in to sectional as you can tell by how Jared Kleff did in the 182 pound match going against No. 1 seed (Caleb Harris of Lakota East) in the quarterfinal. Kleff had every opportunity to win that match and wouldn’t give up.”
Kleff had Harris on his back two different times but couldn’t finish him off. Harris managed to pin Kleff in 3:50 to advance to the semifinals.
“Jon Hoover (145 pounds) was going against the top seed (Alex Burger of Fairmont) and wouldn’t let his arm go, so Burger couldn’t do anything so that match was progressing in our favor,” Bitsko noted.
Burger managed to turn the tables to pin Hoover in 3:39.
“Match after match I saw the kids improving and would have liked to have five qualify legitimately, but four legits and an alternate is a good start for a young team,” Bitsko added. “We’ve got two seniors going to district and three underclassmen, so we are moving in the right direction. Like I told you back in November when we were at Northmont for that first match, we had nowhere to go but up and I really honestly feel that the Wayne wrestlers right now are progressing probably more than any other team in the area. I think other teams are at their height and are not reaching progression where I’ve got kids that were in football season so long that we are still growing every week. We are actually at mid-season for four of my guys. Four of my guys have only been in the wrestling room for seven weeks, which I think helps us. The district tournament is going to be exciting for us, that’s for sure.”
The Division I district tournament will take place at Kettering’s Trent Arena starting at 4 p.m. Friday and continues Saturday at 10 a.m. with finals beginning at 6 p.m.
