MIAMISBURG — The Wayne Cross country team continued their season at the Miamisburg Invitational on Saturday in some tough weather conditions. Both the boys and girls had a fair showing, girls were 12th out of 16 teams and the boys were 13th out of 24 teams. Both squads improved their team average despite being much colder and rainy on Saturday.
The girls were led by senior Kristen Hoelscher who ran a season best of 22:57, followed closely behind by sophomore Schyler Schenck’s 23:11 to finish 42nd and 45th respectively in the 255 runner field. “Excellent race by both Kristen and Schyler at this point in the season. They are positioned nicely to drop some significant time as the season rolls on.”
Rounding out the varsity action for the girls were juniors Madelynn Cochren (24:49), Abigail Kerestes (25:43) and Bailey Koss (27:33). Those five averaged for a team time of 24:52, which is almost two minutes faster than the previous week.
For the boys, they were led by junior Lucas Houk’s 14th overall finish (out of over 400 runners) in a time of 17:21. “This was Lucas’ first race of the season due to injury, so it was nice to have him back. It wasn’t as fast as he wanted, but he is getting back into racing shape.”
Junior Vincent Statzer (18:59) finished 73rd overall who was followed by Cole Williamson (19:44), William Stephens (19:47), Rohan Storaci (19:53), Noah McGeorge (19:56) and Daniel Cole (19:56). “Again we have a nice group of runners who are all under 20 and finishing close together, but their times need to continue to drop for the team to place higher.”
“Overall, I am pleased with how we ran at this meet despite the rough conditions. I know the team wanted to run faster than what we did, so hopefully we can use that at the next meet.”
The cross country team will continue their season on Saturday (Sept. 9th) at Golden Gate Park for the Brookville Invitational.
