HEBRON — The Wayne cross country team opened up their season on Saturday at the OHSAA Preseason Invitational held at National Trail Raceway in Hebron. Both the boys and girls team had excellent showings and immediately saw improvements from last season.
“This is a very difficult meet to begin the season,” said head coach Todd Anderson. “Many of the top teams in the state attended this meet so it is definitely a good gauge on where we rank in the state.”
On the boys side, the team finished 21st out of 26 teams. Leading the way for the Warriors was sophomore Lucas Houk, who finished 43rd overall in a time of 17:35. Senior Jacob Miller followed in a time of 18:38 with Noah McGeorge, Vincent Statzer and Daniel Cole rounding out the scoring. “For the most part, I am very pleased with the way we ran this first meet. Lucas ran a good race and showed he is running right where he left off from last season. Noah and Vincent each ran a great race, establishing a new PR in their first meet.”
For the girls, the team finished 21st out of 25 teams. Junior Kristen Hoelscher led the way in a time 24:22, which was good enough for 58th place out of the near 200 runners overall. In her first high school race, sophomore Madelynn Cochren finished next for Wayne. Abigail Kerestes, Muskan Chander and Rebekah Spence finished in the top 5 for the team. “In our top 5 girls, 4 of them established a new personal best. They have been improving greatly this summer and I see those times dropping even more.”
When compared to last season, the team average is 15 seconds faster than at this point last year for the boys and over two minutes for the girls.
“The team is in great shape right now and I think that as soon as we get our racing strategy down and our speed up, we will be a great team,” said Anderson.
The team will continue their season at the Bob Schul Invitational at Milton-Union High School on Saturday. The boys will race at 9 a.m. and the girls will race at 10:10.
