FAIRBORN — The Lady Warriors opened local play with a dominating 66-22 win against Fairborn High School at Baker Middle School on Wednesday. Wayne built a 38-11 halftime advantage and outscored Fairborn 19-3 in the third quarter and 11-10 in the final quarter.

Shai McGruder had a game high of 20 points and eight steals while Destiny Bohanon contributed 13 points and eight assists.

Olivia Trice continued her hot shooting, hitting two of four attempts from the three-point point line with 12 points.

Wayne Coach Sonya Miller said that all of the Lady Warriors played a valuable role on the night.

Maya Dunson recorded 11 rebounds and nine assists while Mali Morgan-Elliott had eight points.

Miller cited Morgan-Elliott for her “tone setting toughness” and praised the defensive intensity of senior Shenell Parker. Miller said this was a “total team effort” as the Lady Warriors exhibited pride on defensive effort and noted that intensity came to the forefront.

“It’s a simple formula,” said Miller. “When we get stops, we win. It’s not rocket science, we have to and will defend.”

Fairborn shot 20 percent from the field and committed 26 turnovers. Courtney Mustard and Kaylie Cook led Fairborn with six points each.

The Lady Warriors will host Lebanon at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the home opener of the year, which is being promoted as a “white out.” Coach Miller said she is looking forward to the community support and said she is ecstatic about the culture and student athletes that are being developed.
