MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — The Wayne girls basketball team travelled to Murfreesboro,Tenn. and participated in the 2015 Turkey Jamm Classic following Thanksgiving. On Friday, the squad defeated Tift County, Ga. 67-47 before falling to Riverdale, Tenn. 64-34 on Saturday.
Freshman Destiny Bohanon paced Wayne with 21 points. She connected on 10 of 16 shots from the field and had six assists and four steals.
Freshman Olivia Trice added 17 points, hitting five of nine shots from the field, including four of five attempts from three-point range.
Sophomore Maya Dunson contributed 16 points, hitting six of 12 shots from the field and all three free throw attempts. She had 11 rebounds, six at the defensive end. She also had three assists.
Sophomore Shai McGruder recorded 11 points, hitting five of eight shots from the field. She grabbed 10 rebounds, six at the offensive end. She recorded nine steals, four assists and three blocked shots.
Kiara Herring came off the bench with two points and three defensive rebounds.
Mali Morgan-Elliott, a freshman, contributed five rebounds and two assists.
Wayne shot 55 percent from the field including 42 percent from three point range
On Saturday, the Lady Warriors shot 33 percent from the field and trailed 29-18 at halftime to Riverdale, who outscored the locals 19-10 in the third quarter and 16-6 in the fourth quarter. After committing 11 turnovers on Friday, the locals were plagued by 29 turnovers in this contest.
Bohanon paced the locals with 13 points, hitting six of 12 shots from the field. She had six assists, three rebounds and three steals. McGruder added 10 points, hitting five of nine shots from the field. She had nine rebounds, five at the offensive end. She also had three assists, two steals and two blocked shots. Morgan-Elliott added five rebounds and two points while Dunson and Trice had three and two points, respectively.
Wayne will play their first home game at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 9 against Lebanon in a game that is being promoted as a “white out.”
