DAYTON — The Wayne girls golf team placed 12th at the Division I Sectional Tournament held on Wednesday, Oct. 6 at Kittyhawk Golf Course with a 484. Centerville dominated the tournament with a 301, 84 strokes ahead of second place Miamisburg. Northmont and Tippecanoe also qualified for the district tournament.
Sophomore Heidi Weeks paced Wayne with a 95 (45-50) while classmate Jennifer Hammond shot a 121. Senior Bailey Massey shot a 133 while sophomore Kelsey Fitzpatrick had a 135. Also competing for Wayne was sophomore Lauren Daily.
Centerville had five of the top six individual placers while Weeks tied for the 12th best individual score, three strokes behind the 92 needed to advance as one of the top four individual placers, not a member of an advancing team.
“We were very proud of Heidi at Sectionals,” said Coach Stephanie Yount. “There were a few missed opportunities throughout the match that in the future she will take advantage of. Heidi is competitive and works hard to improve her game. She was close to making it to the district tournament as an individual, so we know that she will have her sights set on that goal for next year.”
Yount said she looks forward to sophomores Jennifer Hammond, Kelsey Fitzpatrick, and Lauren Daily returning next year.
“Their combined scores from GWOC Preseason was 462 compared to a 384 at the Postseason which truly depicts how they improved during the season,” said Yount. “With additional practice throughout the offseason I think we will be much more competitive next year. We were able to improve from last year with three wins and also had two close losses by two strokes and a heartbreaking loss by one stroke.”
Graduating from the program will be seniors Sydney Steckel and Bailey Massey.
“They both contributed to our improvement this year with Sydney shooting her low round of 55 at Mound Golf Course and Bailey hitting a low of 51 at Echo Hills,” said Yount. “Sydney is a second year player while this was Bailey’s first. I hope they continue to enjoy golf and have many more rounds in the future.”
