SPRINGFIELD — The Wayne golf team placed ninth out of 20 teams in the Arrow Invitational at Windy Knolls Golf Course on Saturday with a 330 team score. Springboro took top team honors.
Bryce Haney shot a 73 two-over par after being one-under after 15 holes to tie for fifth place individually. Coach Jon Soukup said Haney made a mistake on the final hole and hit the ball out of bounds. Soukup said the course was set up “very tough.”
Zach Johnson shot an 82 which Soukup said was a little bit above his average. James Harness shot an 85. Soukup said Harness did not have a good day as eight of his strokes were penalty strokes. He said he would be working with Harness to eliminate penalty shots. AJ Henry added a 90 and struggled with the “fast greens” according to Soukup. Riley Brown shot a 96.
Soukup said that area team scores were a lot lower at this invitational this year. He said he set up the schedule as a tougher schedule this year in order to prepare for the post-season tournament.
On Wednesday, Aug. 19, Wayne (162) fell to visiting Beavercreek (150) with a score that Soukup said was high for Wayne after arriving late for the match. He said that Beavercreek surged on the last four holes. Scores were Haney 39, Johnson 40, Harness 41 and Henry 42.
Wayne travels to Northmont at 4 p.m. on Thursday and to the Chase Knecht Memorial at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Weatherwax and will host Springfield at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 3.
