HUBER HEIGHTS — With eight seniors on the Wayne girls varsity soccer team, Wayne Coach Vic Trapani is expecting a “pretty good” season as this is the most seniors and the most senior starters he’s had the previous three seasons that he’s coached.

“I think we have a little bit more depth than we’ve had in the past, so that helps us,” said Trapani, who indicated the team strength is “a strong senior class” that is spread out across the field.

Co-captains are midfielder Haleigh Russell, midfielder/defender Chiara Baker and defender Madison Doss.

“They’re just hard workers,” said Trapani. “They’re good leaders. They do anything you ask and they lead by example. They practice hard…They’re the first ones out there and the last ones to leave.”

Trapani expects a lot of scoring from second year player and senior Alexcis Jordan. Others to watch are incoming freshman Armani Dortch, a midfielder and sophomore midfielder Ashley Ruble, who has recorded four goals in the first three scrimmages. Also providing a scoring punch are Russell and Baker.

Ashley Flohre, a first year junior starter, will see action as the goalie after being the back-up goalie last season.

In the Greater Western Ohio Conference, Wayne placed fifth out of six teams in the Central Division, but the highlight was tying with Beavercreek, one of the better teams in the GWOC.

“I would like to think that we could finish at the top,” said Trapani. “We just had a let down in one game which dropped us from third place to fifth last year, so, I’d like to think we can improve upon that fifth place finish…

First or second in the GWOC is Trapani’s vision.

If there’s a group that’s going to do it right now, this is the group that’s going to do it,” he said.

He indicated that Centerville and Beavercreek are normally the toughest GWOC Central Division teams.

“They just seem to reload every year,” he said. “You’ve got to be ready to play and play a hard match and you’ve got to play all your minutes and you’ve got to be mentally tough — you can’t be making mistakes while you’re playing.”

Trapani projected that the toughest non-GWOC Central schools would be Tipp City (Sept. 26), Lebanon (Sept. 9) and Northwestern (Oct. 10).

Trapani said that regardless of whether the 2015 squad is having a good or bad practice or scrimmage, their energy level “i s there all the time.

“They really have a desire to be better and you can’t ask for more than that as a coach,” said Trapani. “You know things are going to improve throughout the season because of their work effort.”

Wayne opens the season on Saturday, Aug. 22 at home vs. Xenia.
