Women’s History Month

Sherrod Brown - Senator for Ohio

Originating from a one week celebration in 1978, Women’s History Month has been celebrated since 1987 as a time to recognize women’s significant contributions to the fabric of our nation.

Even with the vast progress that has been made in securing equal rights and opportunity for women, there is still work to be done. On average, women earn only 79 cents for every dollar earned by men, a gap that widens even further once racial disparities are accounted. That’s why U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) is proud to be a co-sponsor of the Paycheck Fairness Act, legislation that would enhance the enforcement of equal pay requirements and prevent employers from punishing workers who discuss salaries amongst each other in an effort to increase pay equity.

Sen. Brown also recognizes that boosting women’s representation in high-paying career fields is essential to closing the wage gap. According to the 2013 American Community Survey, women hold only 26 percent of all Science, Technology Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) jobs despite being half of the U.S. workforce. That is why he is an original cosponsor of the Women and Minorities STEM Booster Act, a bill that will provide a competitive grant to support STEM outreach, mentoring, professional development, and other programs to support women and minorities in STEM fields so that they will be ready for jobs of the 21st century.

This Women’s History Month, Sen. Brown celebrates America’s long history of trailblazing and the women of all ages on the brink of leaving their mark on the history books. Also, since 1978 the State of Ohio has maintained an Ohio Women’s Hall of Fame to recognize the contributions women have made and continue to make in the across the state, the country, and the world.

Sen. Brown will continue to be an ally in the fight to close the wage gap, increase the number of women pursuing science, technology, engineering and math jobs and education, break the glass ceiling for women in the business world, address women’s health disparities, and protect women’s reproductive rights.
