Throughout the school year, and especially during the holiday season, the staff and students of the Huber Heights City Schools are focused on activities to give back to our community. Throughout the years, a variety of different needs have been the target of the generous spirit of our school district.
All of our schools collected canned goods and food items for the FISH food pantry. In addition to food donations, over the years there have been many other “giving” projects occurring in our schools. Students have sent care packages to our troops serving overseas and hosted breakfast and other programs honoring our veterans. Staff members have donated money to help students in their schools. Toys and games have been collected for different organizations and money from numerous activities collected for a variety of charities. Wayne’s National Honor Society, class cabinets, ROTC, and Interact Club teamed up to sponsor a warmth drive for the homeless. The students used the donations to assemble care packages for those in need.
Students also give back by sharing their talents with the community. Recently, the Valley Forge Elementary Choir performed at both the Tree Lighting Ceremony at the Huber Heights Wayne Township Historical Society and the Holiday Concert at the Eichelberger Amphitheater. Entertainment at the annual Senior Citizens Holiday Dinner is always provided by our school district’s students. Over the years, a number of our vocal and instrumental groups have performed for the dinner’s attendees including the Wayne High School Jazz Band, the Wayne Choraliers and Chorus, and our elementary school choirs. Each year, the evening’s festivities are topped off with the reading of “The Night Before Christmas” by one of our elementary school students.
Helping our students learn the importance of giving back is one way we help them grow into productive citizens of our community.
