HUBER HEIGHTS — Wayne scored four touchdowns in the first quarter and Messiah DeWeaver threw three first quarter touchdown passes as Wayne overpowered visiting Troy 49-7 Friday night. In a Greater Western Ohio Conference crossover, Wayne improved to 4-0 and celebrated “Homecoming” night in a winning fashion. Troy dropped 1-3, struggling against a stout Wayne defense and explosive offense.

Wayne dominated the game producing 436 yards of total offense compared to Troy’s 117 yards. Wayne’s 212 yards rushing and 224 passing produced a balanced attack that was just too much for Troy to handle.

“We distribute the ball well, said Coach Jay Minton,” it’s not just one guy, the offensive line is really coming together and our defense is playing well.”

On the very first possession, DeWeaver connected on a pass to Matt Wilcox for 45 yards and a touchdown. With only 41 seconds into the start of the game, the catch and shifty run by Wilcox set the tone for the first half and gave Wayne a 7-0 lead.

“It was my first touchdown of the season and it felt great, it helped to set the tone,” Wilcox said.” We prepare every week no matter who the opponent is.”

Wilcox also talked about their desire to not just be a good team, but a great team and that was a mindset instilled by the coaches to help keep them focused.

“The Wayne Train is rolling,” said Wilcox.

Wayne struck again on another DeWeaver pass to L’Christian Smith for a 65-yard touchdown with 8:02 left in the first quarter to bring the score to 14-0.

The next Wayne drive featured three power runs by Fred Pitts to set up a 5-yard touchdown pass from DeWeaver to Smith with 3:58 remaining in the first quarter to make the score 21-0.

Wayne was not done as Josh Foster carried a hand off for 6-yards into the end zone with 0:27 seconds remaining in the firstquarter to make the score 28-0.

At the very start of the second quarter the Wayne defense made their presence known on a Donyell Denson interception for a “pick-6” with 11:56 to extend the lead to 35-0.

The Wayne defense came through again, as Denson collected his second interception on the night to set up a Louis Walton 27-yard run for a touchdown with 10:59 left in the second quarter to give Wayne a commanding 42-0 lead.

Wayne scored one more time as Antwand Wilson shot through a gap on the right side of the line from six yards out and Jesse Baily added the extra point with 57 seconds left in the second quarter to make the score at halftime 49-0.

The only score for Troy came in the third quarter with 5:57 left as quarterback Hayden Kotwica connected on a 30-yard pass to Hayata Nagata for a touchdown. That completed the scoring for the night, with a running clock rule in place and Wayne playing many of its reserve players, en route to a 49-7 victory.

The state’s second ranked Associated Press Division I team, will travel to Miamisburg at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 25.

“It’s a lot easier getting there, than it is to stay there,” said Minton. “Our principal had a great quote that he shared with us that states ‘the higher the flag flies on the flagpole, the harder the wind blows.’”

Wayne will take those words to heart as they move forward toward their quest to not just be another good team, but a great team.
