WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) Monday applauded news that the U.S. Air Force’s Air University (AU) will move two professional continuing education programs to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

Wright-Patterson’s Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) will now serve as the home to the National Security Space Institute (NSSI) and the Nuclear College segment of AU’s Center for Unconventional Weapons Studies.

“The Air Force’s decision to move these national security education programs to Wright-Patterson is a testament to the world class, defense-focused education and training that the Air Force Institute of Technology provides,” Brown said. “This decision will help Wright-Patterson’s Air Force Institute of Technology continue its work to enhance the United States’ national security.”

AFIT offers graduate degrees, certificate programs, and professional continuing education for Airmen. The NSSI, which will be realigned from Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, Colorado, provides national security instruction and training for the U.S. Department of Defense as it relates to space technology. The Nuclear College, currently located at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico, provides several courses on the Air Force’s nuclear enterprise.

Brown continues to advocate for AFIT. In June 2015, as the Senate considered the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2016, Brown cosponsored an amendment that would provide the Air Force with greater authority to enroll non-detailed persons (non-government civilians) at AFIT and receive reimbursement from the Department. This would lead to better integration between industry, government, and military professionals.
