HUBER HEIGHTS — The Wayne cross country team competed at the Saturday Night Lights Invitational held at Centerville High School this past weekend. The Warriors were led by Lucas Houk who finished with a new personal best time in the 5k at 16:15 to place 20th in the Championship race. “This is the race we have been waiting on Lucas to do all season. He finally had the competition and was in good health to race to his full ability. He is in excellent shape as the postseason is approaching.”

The boys varsity team competed in the Varsity B race in the Invitational and they finished 19th out of the 28 teams in their race. The varsity squad was led by Vincent Statzer who also ran a new personal best of 18:29. He was followed closely behind by freshmen Rohan Storaci (19:05) and Cole Williamson (19:11). Senior Daniel Cole (19:35) and junior Willliam Stephens (19:36) rounded out the varsity scoring for the Warriors. Harley Kerns, Noah McGeorge and Alex Cardone were in the top 10 for the team.

On the girls side, the team finished 28th out of the 33 teams in their race. Senior Kristen Hoelscher race a season best time of 21:32 to finish 53rd out of the almost 300 runners in the race. Madelynn Cochren race a new personal best time of 22:51 to finish second on the team. “Kristen and Madelynn had a fantastic race. They have been consistent in races here lately, so I knew they were both due for a big drop in time.”

Junior Abigail Kerestes (25:26) and sophomore Kyrsten Childress (25:50) also had new personal bests. Sophomore Bailey Koss (26:50) rounded out the varsity scoring for the team. Brooklyn McFadden, Rachel Wise and Zamarys Ramirez were the top finishers on the team.

“I am really proud of how the team ran at this meet. The first couple of races were very hot and humid, but we still did well. We have about 3 weeks until the GWOC Championships and we are in great shape right now. As our practices keep getting more difficult, we will continue to drop times just in time for the postseason.”

The Warriors will continue their season at the Buck Creek Invitational held in Springfield on Saturday. The boys will race at 9:30 and the girls will race at 10:45.
