HUBER HEIGHTS — Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training, conducted by the Huber Heights Fire Division (H.H.F.D.), begins on Monday, Aug. 3, and ends on Sep. 21. There are eight classes, held once a week on Monday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. Enrollees are required attend every class.

CERT training prepares citizens to respond to emergency situations in their communities. Each CERT member completes 24 hours of training on disaster preparedness, basic disaster medical operations, fire safety, light search and rescue, and other essential topics. The training also includes disaster simulations in which participants practice skills they learned throughout the course.

In the event of an emergency, CERT members can provide immediate assistance to victims, assist in organizing spontaneous volunteers at a disaster site and provide critical support to first responders. CERT is about readiness, people helping people, rescuer safety, and doing the greatest good for the greatest number. CERT is a positive and realistic approach to emergency and disaster situations where citizens will be initially on their own and where their actions can make a difference.

CERT training consists of one three-hour class per week for six weeks followed by two practical exercises. The training is available to any Miami Valley resident who wishes to attend and will be held at H.H.F.D. Headquarters (Station 22), 7008 Brandt Pike in Huber Heights.

To become a CERT student, you must be at least 18 years of age, and be of average health and physical capability. Please apply for the training by July 29. Early application is recommended as the maximum number of students that will be accepted is 20. Application may be made to Lieutenant John Russell, Training Officer, at 937-237-6055, or Email at jrussell@hhoh.org.
