HUBER HEIGHTS — The Huber Heights Charter Review Commission held its first meeting on April 28. The meeting was primarily organizational in nature.

During the meeting, Josh King was appointed as the commission’s chairperson and John Russell was appointed as the vice-chair.

Other commission members are Mark Campbell, Richard Shaw, Matt Truman, David Manship, Jeff Heinrich, Toni Webb, and Nancy Byrge.

The commission agreed to meet weekly on Wednesday evenings at 8 p.m. Meetings are planned for an hour, but each member agreed to go to 10 p.m. if necessary.

The next meeting was scheduled for Wednesday, May 4 and was to discuss the commission’s process, needed staff support, and any other housekeeping issues.

The commission would then begin reviewing each section of the city’s charter beginning with the Preamble, Article I, etc.

While it is anticipated some articles may be worked through rather quickly, some articles, such as form of government, may take more than one session to review.

The commission is undertaking the first review of the charter since it was adopted in 1981. Any recommended changes will be sent to the city council for review.

To be adopted, voters wold have to approve the changes. For changes to appear on the November 2016 ballot, they must be certified to the Montgomery County Board of Elections in August.

Byrge, who is also a member of city council, said that speed was not a driving force.

“We should not be pushing for the ballot,” she said. “We want a thorough review. If we make it on the ballot in November, so be it.”

All meetings of the Charter Review Commission are open to the public.
