HUBER HEIGHTS — When you are thousands of miles from home serving your nation, sometimes its the little comforts of home that make a difference.

That’s why Peggy Haines spearheads a fundraiser and collection for troops and their K-9’s at Amvets Post 464 in Huber Heights. Haines is the Americanism Chairperson for the Ladies Auxiliary at Post 464.

“The very definition of Americanism, the unfailing love of country; loyalty to its institutions and ideas; eagerness to defend it against all enemies; undivided allegiance to the flag; and a desire to secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and posterity, is something we Americans should all have in common,” said Haines.

The post began a fundraiser last November for the U.S. War Dogs and their human counterparts. Through various fundraisers and donations, the ladies donate the first two Sunday’s of each month making care packages with contents ranging from dog food and snacks, dog boots, as well as food, snacks, and personal hygiene products for the troops. To date, six care packages ranging from 21-29 pounds have been sent with $800 being spent on products and shipping.

“We do what we can to show our gratitude to our military,” said Haines. “We want all who have defended and are currently defending freedoms of the oppressed to know that we thank them for their service and sacrifice.”

Anyone who wishes to donate to this project may do so at Amvets Post 464, 5420 Brandt Pike in Huber Heights.

“I would like to make this project go viral so that other organizations can continue to support our troops as well as their K9’s,” said Haines. “God Bless America and God Bless our troops.”
